Problems of Global Warming

Just like the human body, Mother Earth
produces symptoms of “illness” and pain when
not protected or properly taken care of.
|

Greenhouse
gases are like a blanket. Many experts now
think the way we burn fossil fuels and adding
chemicals to the atmosphere is causing the
blanket to become thicker. This makes the Earth
warmer, an effect known as global warming. |

This is an
aerial photo of the Glacier AX010 in Nepal
in 1978.
This was what
the photographers saw when they returned to
Nepal in 2004. The global warming has
drastically reduced the size of the glacier. |

Global
warming has caused the icebergs and glaciers to melt and turn into water.
It will
also cause the water in the oceans to
expand. This will then result in the
rising of the sea level.

Over 25
years, these lakes in Afghanistan have
totally dried
up due to global warming. |

Global
warming has increased the chances of natural
disasters - drying up lakes, melting away glaciers,
causing huge tidal waves like tsunamis, and
bringing droughts which severely affect the
plantation of agricultural crops.

The red line
represents the Artic sea ice boundary in
1979. However, since that time, more than
20% of the Polar Ice Cap has melted away due
to global warming. |

From 1941 to
2004,
this whole layer of ice has melted away. |
|

From 1938 to
1981, the melting forms a new lake.
The water level of this lake
continues to rise over the years, judging
from this photograph taken in 2005. |

This picture
of a large iceberg was taken in 1909.
When the
photographers went back in 2004, the iceberg
had completely disappeared. |

Global
warming causes droughts worldwide like in
this example. |

The ice cap
on Kilimanjaro, Africa has been drastically
reduced over the years due to global
warming. |

These common
natural disasters are happening around the
globe more and more frequently. |

If the sea
level continues to rise, most of the coastal
shores of West Malaysia and Thailand would
get submerged under water.

If the sea
level rises a further 5 to 6 metres, alot of
islands around Indonesia, including
Singapore, would be submerged.
